Chief Eric R. Finch, Sr.

Chief Of Police for the City Of Montezuma

 



        Eric R. Finch, son of Ms. Clora T. Finch of
Americus, Georgia, and the late Solomon Barnes of Cleveland, Ohio was born on December 30, 1965 in Cleveland, Ohio. He is the husband of, Mrs. Tracy Lusane Finch and the father of two sons, Eric, Jr. and Sage.  He is a faithful member of Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church, where he serves as a Steward.  He is also a member of St. John Lodge #17 and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.  He is employed by the City of Montezuma, where he serves as Chief of Police for the Montezuma Police Department.  He is a member of the National Association of Chiefs of Police, Georgia Chiefs of Police, and the National Organization for Black Law Enforcement Executives. Finch is an instructor for the Georgia Police Academy and a Adjunct Professor at South Georgia Technical College in Americus, Georgia. Currently, Chief Finch serves as the President of District #4 of Georgia Chiefs of Police.

 

    Chief Finch received his early childhood education in the Sumter County Schools System.  He is a 1984 graduate of Americus High School. After high school, he attended Troy State University in Troy, Alabama and graduated with Bachelor of Science in Police Administration. He was a member of the Student Government Association where he served as Senator, and Chairman of the Budget Committee.  He was also a member of the “Sound of the South” marching band.  Academics played a very essential role in his life.  He was on the President’s List, Dean List, Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society, Alpha Phi Sigma Criminal Justice Honor Society, and was chosen Who’s Who Among Students in Universities and Colleges and a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.   Finch graduated from Columbus State University in Columbus, Georgia, with a Master’s Degree in Justice Administration (Magna Cum Laude) where he was a member of the National Honor Society and completed the 24th session of Command College a prestigious program of advanced leadership and management studies for law-enforcement executives in the State of Georgia.

 

    Chief Finch started his law enforcement career with the Dawson Police Department in 1988.  His performance and professionalism was beyond superior, he quickly rose through the ranks as a lieutenant.  Through grace working by faith, the Lord opened up the windows of heaven and poured out a great blessing.  In 1990, Finch was offered a job at the Montezuma Police Department where he served twelve years of dedicated service as the Assistant Chief of Police and currently serving as Chief of Police. 

 

    Chief Finch has received awards of excellence such as Who’s Who Among Executives and Professionals 2002-2003 edition and 100 Men of America.  In 2004, Chief Finch along with his department was awarded the “Dr. Curtis McClung Award of Excellence” for the State of Georgia and in 2005 Finch led the Montezuma Police Department to State Certification and Re-Certification in 2009. As he led the Department through Certification, he designed the Assessment Tests, Entrance Exams, and a Field Training Program, thus saving the City of Montezuma thousands of dollars in Professional Services cost. Currently, the Montezuma Police Department serve as a model for smaller agencies within the State of Georgia, advising them that smaller agency can achieve excellence through innovative measures.  In 2006, Chief Finch was nominated for Georgia Chief of the Year. Chief Finch serves on the Advisory Board for South Georgia Technical College Law Enforcement Academy and the American Red Cross Board of Directors.

 

    Chief Finch’s major accomplishment was sitting on the steering committee in the development of the Middle Flint Regional E-911 System. The Middle Flint Regional E-911 System serves seven rural counties with seventy agencies participating. This is the largest E-911 Center in the southeastern part of the United States.

 

    Chief Eric Finch is defined as a proven leader, a team player, community and people oriented, customer service oriented, an excellent communicator, a strategic thinker, collaborative, self-confident, responsive, open and approachable, flexible but decisive, results oriented, organized, enthusiastic and hard working, resourceful, ethical and trustworthy, politically sensitive but apolitical, and diplomatic.
